Part III

Cognitive Discourse Functions (CDFs)

CDFs are a set of thinking and communication skills that learners use to engage with academic content. They represent the intersection between cognitive processes and linguistic functions.

Some key CDFs include:
1. Defining
2. Describing
3. Explaining
4. Evaluating
5. Hypothesizing
6. Classifying

In the following video, Prof. Do Coyle explains the pedagogic approach Pluriliteracies Teaching for Deeper Learning (PTDL), which promotes deeper learning and the development of transferable 21st century knowledge and skills such as critical & creative thinking, effective communication, collaboration and responsibility:

These functions help students articulate their understanding of subject matter across different disciplines. In pluriliteracies teaching, CDFs play a crucial role in developing learners’ ability to express complex ideas in multiple languages and contexts.
