Part III

What do we open space for when we implement the above ways of working with learners?

We open space for:

A multilingual and multicultural classroom, effectively leveraging students’ prior knowledge, experiences, and home languages that can significantly enhance the learning process. Teachers should start by creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences and cultural backgrounds. This can be achieved through open discussions and targeted questions that connect the lesson content to the students’ own lives. Encouraging the use of home languages in research and presentations helps students express their ideas more clearly and confidently. Teachers can also promote diverse learning paths by allowing students to engage with problems in ways that suit their learning styles and interests, using various tools and media. Collaborative learning activities that involve peer-to-peer knowledge exchange foster a sense of community and collective problem-solving. Additionally, incorporating multimodal information searches and critical evaluation of sources enables students to view issues from multiple perspectives, enhancing their critical thinking skills. By integrating these strategies, teachers can create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that respects and values the diverse backgrounds of all students, ultimately leading to a richer and more meaningful educational experience.
